Keeping Lake Malawi Mbuna

Post by CASJ » Sun Sep 03, 2017 8:20 pm

Lake Malawi Mbuna:
Most Mbuna do not mix with peacocks, haplochromis, and milder Lake Victorians.
Most Mbuna are best kept in mixed sex groups of six or more.
Several types can be mixed in one tank. The larger the tank the better the mix you can make.
Aggressive, and especially extremely aggressive types are best kept in species only tanks.
Do not mix mbuna that are too close in color.
Do not mix aggressive mbuna with milder fish.

Some Milder Mbuna Males will mix with peacocks, haplochromis and milder Lake Victorians, see examples below.

Examples of Milder Lake Malawi mbuna:
Cynotilapia zebroides “Ntekete” (White/Red Top), Cynotilapia zebroides “ Cobue” (Orange Top), Cynotilapia zebroides “Ntekete” (White/Red Top), Labidochromis caeruleus Lions Cove (Yellow Lab), Lidochromis caeruleus Nkhata Bay (White Labs), Labidochromis sp. “Mbamba” (Yellowfin Mbambe, Yellow Top Mbumba), Cynotilapia zebroides Nkhata Bay (Yellow Blaze), Iodotropheus sprengerae (Rusty), Labidochromis joanjohnsonae (Exasperatus), Labidochromis joanjohnsonae “Red” (Red Exasperatus) (Hybrid), Pseudotropheus elegans Msuli “ Yellow Tail” (Yellow Tail Acei, Purple Acei) These fish like to school near the top of the tank in groups. They are very active fish and get excited at feeding time. May jump out of the top out the tank, especially during feeding. Make sure you have a strong tank lid.
